All Blacks beat Springboks to win Championship

The All Blacks have retained the Rugby Championship after beating South Africa 38-27 in a nine-try thriller at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

New Zealand out-scored the Springboks by five tries to four to remain unbeaten in this year's competition - and since it began two years ago.

Two tries came from Liam Messam and the others from Ben Smith, Beauden Barrett and Kieran Read.

The World Cup holders led 21-15 at half-time and overcame second-half yellow cards to forwards Messam and Ben Franks to finish nine points ahead of the Springboks in the table.

The match had everything, including a typing error.

The All Blacks replacement hooker was listed on the team sheet as Keven Mealamu even though it was Dane Coles who took the field as the back-up number two.

Fortunately for New Zealand, the Springboks skipper Jean de Villiers was happy for play to continue.
