Phoenix sign paramedic on one-year deal

The Wellington Phoenix have signed a Spanish paramedic on a one year contract for the upcoming A League season, but it's his football ability not his medical skills they want to make the most of.

Albert Riera, a 29-year-old midfielder, played for Auckland City in a recent pre-season match against the Phoenix and impressed Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick.

Merrick says Riera's a ball winner, keeps hold of possession and passes well, and his signing will add depth and experience to their midfield, which will be particularly useful when the side's All Whites are on international duty.

Riera arrived in Auckland almost three years ago and while he has played semi-professional football previously he says he hadn't intended making a living from the sport while here.
