Gasquet makes early exit from Shanghai

The in-form French tennis player Richard Gasquet has become the first high-profile casualty at the storm-hit Shanghai Masters.

The ninth seed was beaten 6-3 6-4 by the world number 43, Vasek Pospisil from Canada, dealing a heavy blow to the Frenchman's chances of qualifying for next month's World Tour Finals in London.

Another seeded Frenchman, Gilles Simon, also lost his first round match, to another Frenchman Benoit Paire.

The top eight seeds all have a bye into the second round.

Tournament organisers are still playing catch-up after a Typhoon dumped more rain on Shanghai than the city's seen since 1961.
