Federer crashes out in Shanghai

Roger Federer's forgettable year in world tennis has continued with another demoralising tournament exit, beaten in the third round of the Shanghai Masters by the world number 42 Gael Monfils.

The Swiss great lost to the flamboyant Frenchman in three sets, but he's still confident of a strong finish to the new season.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion's remaining focus this season is qualifying for the World Tour finals in London involving the game's top eight players.

On a day of shocks in Shanghai, third seed David Ferrer lost in straight sets to Germany's Florian Mayer and the fourth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych lost in three sets to the Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.
