The International Athletics Federation has ratified Jacko Gill's world junior shot put record.

The 18-year-old threw 23 metres in Auckland in August, breaking the previous mark set in 2009 by current senior world champion David Strol of Germany.

Gill is the second junior world record holder from New Zealand - javelin thrower Gavin Lovegrove held a world mark in 1986.

Gill will now turn his attention to the heavier shot in an attempt to qualify for next year's Commonwealth Games.
