Vettel wins Japan GP

5:40 am on 14 October 2013

Sebastian Vettel stormed to his fourth win in five years at the Japanese Grand Prix last night, but he'll have to wait to celebrate a fourth successive Formula One world championship.

In the closing stages of the race Vettel reeled in his departing teammate Mark Webber and the Lotus driver Romain Grosjean, who took third place for Lotus.

But Fernando Alonso's fourth place means Vettel's celebrations stay on ice at least until India in two weeks, despite the German's career-best run of five straight race wins.

Webber started the race on pole for the first time this year, but Grosjean took the lead with a scorching start from fourth on the grid, and it was lap 41 when Vettel finally took over.

Vettel leads the championship race by 90 points over Fernando Alonso by 90 points with four races remaining and should secure his fourth successive title in India in a fortnight.
