The New Zealand motor racing driver Scott Dixon has claimed his third IndyCar series championship after coming through an eventful race to finish fifth at the Grand Prix of Fontana in California.

Entering the final race of the season with a 25-point lead in the driver standings, Dixon needed to finish at least sixth to ensure he finished ahead of his long-time rival Helio Castroneves.

Dixon had to come from 17th on the grid after he was penalised for switching engines and battled with overheating troubles in the race.

However the fifth place finish was enough to secure a 27-point victory over Castroneves, who finished sixth after starting 12th.

The race was won by Australian Will Power.
