Li reaches WTA semis

9:12 am on 26 October 2013

Li Na has reached the semi-finals of tennis's WTA Championships with a 6-2 6-1 rout of Victoria Azarenka in Istanbul.

It's another famous first to the collection for the first Chinese player to win a Grand Slam singles title - it's the first time Li has qualified from the group stage of the tour's flagship tournament.

She avenged her narrow defeat to the Belarusian at the Australian Open final in January, showing no mercy after Azarenka suffered a lower back injury in the sixth game that required three lots of treatment and significantly impaired her movement.

The result eliminated Azarenka and means Jelena Jankovic, the former world number one from Serbia, qualifies from the White Group in second place, irrespective of the result of her final group match against Sara Errani.

Jankovic will face Red Group winner Serena Williams in Saturday's semi-finals while Li will meet Petra Kvitova, the 2011 champion, who made the semi-finals with a 6-7 6-2 6-3 win over Angelique Kerber of Germany.
