Tasman have held off Hawke's Bay 26-25 in Nelson to win a gripping provincial rugby Championship final and earn promotion to the top division next season.
Tasman led 23-10 at half-time but could only notch a single penalty after that as the second half belonged to Hawke's Bay, and only desperate defence from the Makos kept the Magpies from taking the lead.
Hawke's Bay had the chance to win it with a sideline conversion after scoring a last-minute try, but first five Ihaia West couldn't kick the goal.
Both teams scored three tries. Marty Banks notched one of those and one conversion for Tasman and also kicked three out of four penalties, while West converted two of Hawke's Bay's tries but only kicked two out of five penalty attempts.
