The New Zealand women's football team has lost 4-1 to the United States in San Francisco, the first game of a two-match series.
USA, the world's number one ranked team, led 3-0 at half-time, but a better second half effort from the Football Ferns helped Hannah Wilkinson score in the final 10 minutes.
The two teams meet again on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio.
