Black Sticks women beat Australia first up

5:33 am on 31 October 2013

The New Zealand women's hockey team has made the perfect start to the Oceania Cup in Stratford, beating Australia 3-2.

Gemma Flynn opened the scoring for the Black Sticks, Australia scored the next two, before Petrea Webster levelled up just before half time and Sophie Cocks got the winner with just 5 minutes remaining.

The two sides are likely to meet in Sunday's final, while in the other women's match Papua New Guinea beat Samoa 2-1.

Head coach Mark Hager says its pleasing to open up with a win, but Australia applied a lot of pressure and they struggled to get the ball out of the back at times and that's something to work on for their next game.

Meanwhile in the men's competition New Zealand beat Papua New Guinea 18-nil, while the Australian men beat Samoa 32-nil.

Today the New Zealand men play Australia and the New Zealand women play Papua New Guinea.
