New Zealand men's sprint cycling team had to settle for fourth at the opening World Cup event in Manchester.

It was pipped out of the bronze in the ride-off against Olympic champions, Great Britain after the powerhouse Germans claimed the gold medal.

The new-look and youthful men's pursuit team was sixth fastest in qualifying, but less than 0.1seconds from a medal ride won by hosts and Olympic champions Great Britain.

Auckland's world champion Aaron Gate lies in third place after the opening day of the men's omnium competition.
