Newcastle, who'd only won once at home this season were chasing a much-needed victory after their 2-1 defeat by Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby last weekend.

Sunderland lost 1-0 to Hull City, West Bromwich Albion beat bottom placed Crystal Palace 2-0 and West Ham United and Aston Villa drew 0-0.
