The strapping American golfer Dustin Johnson celebrated the biggest win of his career when he surged to a three-shot win over a world class field at the $10.3 million HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.

Johnson broke a three-way battle for the title by playing the last five holes at five under par to pick up his first World Golf Championship title, and the eighth of his career.

Englishman Ian Poulter was second ahead of Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, and Sergio Garcia fired a brilliant 63 to grab fourth place.

New Zealand's Mark Brown tied for 34th and picked up nearly $78,000, and fellow Kiwi Michael Hendry's tie for 50th earned him $50,000.
