Auckland under-23 rider James Oram has won the second stage of cycling's Tour of Southland, the gruelling 138-kilometre race around Invercargill then to the top of Bluff Hill.

Oram pipped fellow junior Liam Aitcheson of Alexandra by five seconds and takes the race leader's yellow jersey by 11 seconds from Aitcheson.

Both riders are in the same position at the top of the under-23 classification.

The leader after the first official stage, Southland's Cameron Karwowski, was two minutes and 25 seconds back and drops from first to 41st.

Stage one winner, the Auckland sprinter Roman van Uden, drops to 64th, almost four minutes off the lead.
