The 19-year-old Invercargill cyclist Matt Zenovich has become the first Southlander in 10 years to win a stage on the Tour of Southland.

Zenovich outsprinted Dunedin's Brad Evans to win the 148-kilometre third stage from Riverton to Te Anau, after the pair had broken clear with 10km kilometres to go.

Race leader Aucklander James Oram finished in the peleton but retains the yellow jersey and an 11-second lead heading into the much-anticipated fourth stage a 179km ride from Te Anau to Queenstown, which finishes with an eight-kilometre climb up Coronet Peak.
