Olympic torch carried in space

7:34 am on 10 November 2013

Two cosmonauts have taken the unlit Olympic torch for a spacewalk, floating above Australia in an historic showcasing of Russia's hosting of the Sochi Winter Olympic Games in three months' time.

The Cosmonaut Oleg Kotov ventured outside the International Space Station with the torch held ceremonially in his gloved hand.

The torch was tethered safely to his bulky spacesuit to make sure it did not spin away in orbit 420 kilometres above the Earth.
