New Zealand sailors Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie have won the International Sailing Federation's Female world sailor of the year award.

The reigning Olympic and World Champions in the Women's 470 class are the first-ever New Zealand women to win the title.

Only three other New Zealanders have featured in the awards previously.

They include Sir Russell Coutts who won Male Sailor of the Year twice, in 1995 and 2003, Mike Sanderson in 2006 and Sir Peter Blake in 1994.

Australia's Mathew Belcher was named the Male Sailor of the Year at the award ceremony in Oman.
