Jamaican sprint star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price has pipped New Zealand shot putter Valerie Adams to the international athletics federation's women's athlete of the year award.

Fraser-Price's national team-mate Usain Bolt won the men's award after also winning in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Fraser-Pryce regained her 100 metres title at the Moscow world championships, her winning time of 10.71 seconds the fastest of the year, as well as anchoring the Jamaican 4x100 team to victory, a national record and the second fastest time in history.

The 26-year-old also clocked the fastest 200 time of the year of 22.13 seconds at the Jamaican championships in June.

Bolt successfully defended both his 100 and 200 metres titles at the Moscow worlds, winning the latter in a 2013 world-leading time of 19.66 seconds.

He concluded his world championships by anchoring a Jamaican quartet to the gold medals in the 4x100 relay, and won 10 out of his 11 100 races including heats, and was unbeaten in his five races over 200.
