Jason Day's relatives die in typhoon

12:08 pm on 19 November 2013

The Australian golf star Jason Day is set to play in the World Cup and Australian Open, only a matter of days after the deaths of eight relatives in Typhoon Haiyan.

Thousands of people were killed in the Philippines when the country was hit by some of the strongest winds recorded and massive waves that destroyed coastal homes.

Day's mother Dening emigrated to Australia from the Philippines 30 years ago and the victims of the typhoon included his grandmother, his uncle and six cousins.

Day will team with world No.2 Adam Scott in the World Cup, beginning at Royal Melbourne on Thursday.
