The Wellington Firebirds have beaten the Central Stags by five wickets on the final ball of their Twenty20 clash in the capital.

Henry Walsh was the hero for the home side as he carved a Peter Trego full toss high into Wellington Stadium to win the thriller, in just the 19-year-old's second HRV Cup match.

The Stags made 195 for eight off their 20 overs batting first before the Firebirds reached the target off the last ball, finishing on 198 for five.

It was the first HRV Cup points for the winner and they hung in the balance throughout the chase.

The Firebirds couldn't back up their home doubleheader, losing by six wickets with one ball to spare to the Auckland Aces on Saturday.
