Phoenix beaten by Sydney in A-League

12:47 pm on 24 November 2013

The Wellington Phoenix have suffered a last-gasp 2-1 loss at Sydney in Australian football's A-League.

The Phoenix appeared set for a share of the points after Kenny Cunningham scored against 10-man Sydney in the 90th minute, however the home side then stole the game four minutes into time added on.

Wellington were on the attack from the first whistle and were left ruing several spurned opportunities.

Jeremy Brockie, in a one-on-one with keeper, blazed the ball over the crossbar in the opening half with Cunningham hitting the post and Vince Lia unlucky not to score with a header in the second half.

Coach Ernie Merrick says if you don't take your chances you can be punished like that.

He says it's an extremely disappointing result but a very, very good performance.

The Phoenix stay second from bottom.

In Saturday night's other matches Melbourne Victory beat Adelaide United 3-0 and Central Coast beat Perth 2-1.
