The stage is set for a bitterly fought Ashes cricket series after Australia's emphatic 381-run win in the opening match of the five-Test series.

England were dismissed late on the fourth day for 179 after being bundled out for olnly 135 in the first innings.

The home team's rejuvenated pace bowler Mitchell Johnson was named man of the match after his five wicket haul in the second innings, to go with his four first innings wickets.

Post-match talk was dominated by ugly scenes out in the middle which included a stump microphone picking up the Australian captain Michael Clarke warning James Anderson in colourful language to get ready for a broken arm as the fast bowler prepared to face Mitchell Johnson.

Australia have decided to retain the same 12-man squad for the second test starting on Thursday week in Adelaide.
