England batsman quits Ashes tour under stress

England cricketers past and present have expressed shock and offered their support to the top order batsman Jonathan Trott, who has withdrawn from the Ashes tour of Australia due to a stress-related illness.

The surprise departure comes after Trott's disappointing scores of 10 and nine in England's 381-run first-Test defeat in Brisbane.

The former England captain Nasser Hussain said the news had come as a real shock, and another ex-skipper Michael Vaughan expressed regret for questioning Trott's performances in the media.

The former England opener Marcus Trescothick, who left the 2006-07 Ashes tour and was finally forced to quit international cricket because of depression, said talking about these things for the first time is tough, but Trott has definitely made the right decision.

England and Wales Professional Cricketers' Association chief executive Angus Potter says the problem wasn't caused by Australian players sledging on the field - rather it's a serious illness which can be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain.

But the hotheaded Australia batsman David Warner Warner may be feeling a little bit remorseful, after calling Trott "weak" and saying the English batsman had "scared eyes".
