Bay of Plenty still lead the way

5:07 am on 18 August 2009

The Bay of Plenty rugby side have no reason to think they won't stay on top of the Air New Zealand Cup standings for a while yet after their enthralling victory over Wellington on Saturday night.

Coach Sean Horan says they are a confident side and know they have to make the most of their opportunities and they've done that so far with three victories. Next weekend they take on Waikato, who're second from bottom with just one win.

Second-placed Canterbury have hit form with Dan Carter running the side, but now he's on All Black duty, they could be well tested by neighbours Tasman who put 50 points on Counties Manukau yesterday.

Tasman are up to third with Southland fourth, Wellington fifth and Manawatu sixth.

Wellington defend the Ranfurly Shield against Auckland next Saturday.
