The fiery Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis will make his first appearance at Auckland's Heineken Open next year after being given a wildcard into the event.

Baghdatis is currently ranked 87th in the world, but has been ranked as high as eighth and is a former Australian Open finalist, best known for his emotional reactions on the court.

He joins a field that includes five of the world's top 20 players, including the world number three David Ferrer, who will be the number one seed as he guns for his fourth straight title and fifth overall.

Auckland regulars, Tommy Robredo, Phillipp Kohlschreiber and Benoit Paire have also been added to the field.
