Murray pips Nadal

6:26 am on 18 August 2009

Andy Murray has been confirmed as world number two by tennis's governing body, the ATP, busting the four-year stranglehold of the top two positions held by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

The 22-year-old Scot was already assured of supplanting Nadal ahead of yesterday's final of the Montreal Masters against Juan Martin del Potro but his win over the Argentinian extended his margin over the Spaniard to 595 points.

All the top players will be in action at the Cincinnati Masters this week continuing the build-up to the year's final Grand Slam tournament, the US Open in New York at the end of the month.
