The American runner Sanya Richards has finally won a global athletics title.

In the feature race on day 4 of the World Athletics Championships, Olympic bronze medallist Richards ran the fastest women's 400 metres of the year to win an elusive world championship gold.

24-year-old Richards failed to qualify for the 2007 world championships, then finished a disappointing third to Britain's Christine Ohuruogu in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Richards, who is trained by men's world record holder Michael Johnson's former coach Clyde Hart, was delighted to triumph after two years of missing out on a global gold.
