Black Sticks thumped by Australia

12:05 pm on 4 December 2013

The New Zealand women's hockey team have suffered their third straight loss, going down 5-1 to Australia at the final World League event in Argentina.

After early pressure Australia grabbed the lead on the 10 minute mark, but New Zealand struck back a few minutes later when Anita Punt scored from a penalty corner.

Ashley Nelson regained the lead for Australia with a deflection before half-time and it was extended as Kellie White scored in the 42nd minute.

They added insult to injury when Jodie Schulz and White added goals late in the piece.

The Black Sticks will now have to play the reigning Olympic champions, the Netherlands, in the quarter-final on Friday.
