World golf number one Tiger Woods has lost his own World Challenge tournament in California in a playoff with fellow American Zach Johnson.

Tournament host Woods was denied a sixth win of the year in sensational fashion by Johnson, who sealed victory

at Sherwood Country Club with a rock-solid par at the 18th, the first extra hole, where Woods lipped out with a five-footer to bogey.

Woods and Johnson, who had twice finished second to his compatriot at the elite limited-field event, had finished regulation amid high drama and sharp swings of fortune on 13 under par 275.

Woods parred the last hole for a two under 70 and Johnson, who came from four strokes behind with four birdies in the last eight holes, closed in with a 68.
