German and Czech wildcards for Auckland Classic

Auckland women's tennis Classic organisers have confirmed two wildcard entries for the tournament starting at the end of the month.

German star Julia Goerges returns, along with the Czech Republic's Andrea Hlaváčková.

Goerges was the second seed at this year's event but for the first time in her career, her world ranking's slipped down rather than gone up in a season, and she's now ranked number 72 due to injuries.

Still, 2013 marked Goerges' fifth straight season in the Top 100, and she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Hlaváčková is ranked 132nd in singles but is a doubles superstar, ranked 10th in the world. This year she won the US Open in both the mixed and women's events and the Budapest doubles, as well as reaching the French Open semi-finals and the Wimbledon quarter-finals, all with her countrywoman Lucie Hradecká - who's also playing the Auckland tournament.

The pair also won the silver medal at the London Olympics. Also in 2012, Hlaváčková won the Auckland doubles title, also with Hradecká.

ASB Classic tournament director Karl Budge says the full-field line-up's one of the best ever. Top seed Roberta Vinci of Italy is also the doubles world number one, and there are five of the top 10 doubles players coming to Auckland.

The field includes the American seven-time Grand Slam Singles champion Venus Williams, former world no.1 and Grand Slam champion Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, Britain's Laura Robson and New Zealand's Marina Erakovic.
