Hourcade to coach Pumas through to World Cup

The Argentinian rugby coach Daniel Hourcade has been given a vote of confidence with a new contract putting him in charge of the Pumas until the 2015 World Cup.

There had been doubts about his position following a disappointing November Test series in which his side lost to Wales and England and struggled to beat Italy.

But Argentina Rugby Federation chief Agustin Pichot says he's done enough to show he could revive the team's fortunes.

Hourcade was drafted in as national coach after the surprise resignation of Santiago Phelan in October following a poor showing by Argentina in the Rugby Championship against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

The choice took many by surprise as Hourcade was little known internationally where he coached in Portugal and at Rouen in France.

With 10 defeats in 12 matches this year and a squad ravaged by internal divisions, Hourcade will face a tough task in getting the Pumas ready for the World Cup.
