NRL fine Sharks over supplements

The Cronulla Sharks rugby league club has been hit with a proposed $1 million fine and their coach, Shane Flanagan, provisionally suspended for 12 months, in response to the club's controversial 2011 supplement programme.

The former Cronulla strength and conditioning coach, Trent Elkin, who now works for Parramatta, has also had his registration provisionally cancelled.

The NRL chief executive, Dave Smith, says the NRL's findings are provisional, and the Sharks, Flanagan and Elkin have a chance to respond before punishments are confirmed.

Smith says the club failed many of the players in regards to safeguarding their health and welfare, saying they were exposed to significant potential risk.

Cronulla has been in the sights of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority for the alleged use of illegal peptides, since the drugs in sport investigation was announced by the Australian Crime Commission.

That investigation is ongoing.
