The New Zealand cricket great Sir Richard Hadlee says the sport's governing body, the ICC, must consider punishing Brett Lee for his bodyline-style bowling at English TV host Piers Morgan.

Former Australian speedster Lee peppered the outspoken Brit with a six-ball, short ball assault in the MCG nets during the tea break on Saturday at the Boxing Day Test.

Hadlee says the exhibition should not have been shown on live television as Lee could have killed the hapless Morgan.

He added that Lee's actions had damaged cricket.

Hadlee says many mums and dads around the world would have seen what happened and may decide to stop their kids from playing the game.

The tea break event resulted after Morgan questioned the courage of England's batsmen against Australian quick Mitchell Johnson during the Ashes series and Lee challenged Morgan to pad up.
