Federer, Nadal on opposite sides of US Open draw

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal could meet in the final of the US Tennis Open starting next week in New York.

The draw for the final grand slam event of the year has Federer and Nadal on opposite sides of the bracket, something not assured for the first time since 2005 because Britain's Andy Murray is ranked second.

Nadal, who's returning from a knee injury, and Federer had been 1-2 in the rankings for the past four years until this month.

Federer plays the US college champion Devin Britton in the opening round, while Nadal has a much tougher opponent, the Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

The Williams sisters can't meet in the womens final. Serena is still ranked number two behind Russia's Dinara Safina, and Venus is the third seed.
