The Dutchman, Michael van Gerwen, has held his nerve to win the World Darts Championship for the first time, beating the Scotsman, Peter Wright, 7-4 in the final at the Alexandra Palace in London.

Van Gerwen raced out to a 4-nil lead in the race to seven sets, before losing his composure allowing the Scot to close the gap to two at 6-4.

However the 24-year-old won the decisive leg in the seventh set to claim the 500-thousand dollar prize, the biggest cheque ever awarded in darts.
