England woeful in 5th Ashes

4:26 pm on 4 January 2014

England have struggled to lunch on day two of the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney at 61 for 5, 265 runs behind Australia's first innings total.

Resuming at 8 for 1, the tourists' top order collapsed in what commentators have labeled the worst batting display of the series.

Their top five batsmen, which included the night watchman James Anderson, were dismissed for a collective score of 19.

The young allrounder Ben Stokes and the debutante Gary Ballance are trying to resurrect the innings and by lunch had combined for a partnership of 38.

Ballance was 17 not out and Stokes was unbeaten on 23.
