Australia perform Ashes clean sweep

6:54 pm on 5 January 2014

Australia have won the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney by 281 runs and secured a five-nil series whitewash over England.

Set 448 for victory shortly after lunch on day three, the tourists were all out for 166 not long after tea.

England's humiliating loss inside three days has been accentuated by their batting coach Graeme Gooch who has criticised his players for throwing their wickets away through out the series.

The former England captain says his team have made elementary errors with the bat and have been unable to exert any pressure on the Australian bowlers.

Michael Clarke's Australia have become just the third team to perform a series clean sweep in the Ashes' 140 year history.

After taking eight wickets in Sydney, the Australian pace bowler Ryan Harris was named man of the match.

Man of the series was awarded to Australia's Mitchell Johnson who took 37 wickets throughout the series at an average of 14.
