Daniel Vettori led a stirring fightback by the New Zealand cricketers on the final day of the second test against Sri Lanka, but the skipper's heroics weren't enough to salvage a draw in Colombo.
The Black Caps were all out for 397 just before tea on the 5th day, coming up 97 runs short of their target after Vettori had posted his fourth test century. He was the last man out for 140.
Despite a 2-nil series loss Vettori emerged from it as one of the stars as New Zealand's leading run scorer, and during the second test he became only the eighth player in test history to score 3,000 runs and take 300 wickets.
Vettori put on 124 for the seventh wicket with Jacob Oram who made a half century, and 69 for the ninth with Iain O'Brien, who occupied the crease for an hour and 18 minutes while making a paltry 12.
Sri Lanka are now outright second behind South Africa in the world test rankings.
