Asafa Powell takes stand in Simpson doping hearing

2:38 pm on 9 January 2014

The former 100-metre world record-holder, Jamaica's Asafa Powell, says he was unaware his former training partner, Sherone Simpson, was taking similar supplements to those he used.

Simpson and Powell tested positive for the same banned stimulant, oxilofrine, at June's Jamaican national championships.

Powell was today giving evidence at Simpson's doping hearing in front of the Jamaican Anti-Doping Commission disciplinary panel.

He has blamed his positive test on nutritional supplements, and says he only became aware that he and Simpson were taking similar supplements when they both failed drug tests.

Powell says his physical trainer, Chris Xuereb, did not give him the supplements, but he did recommend them to him.

Simpson has blamed Xuereb for the positive test, saying he introduced her to several supplements, including one called Epiphany D1 which she was unfamiliar with.
