Heart equal record for winless games

11:58 am on 11 January 2014

Melbourne Heart's winless run in the A-League has extended to a record-equalling 19th game after they were beaten 3-0 by the Perth Glory.

The Heart created a series of golden chances but couldn't put the finishing touch on their work, with a second-half brace to substitute All Whites striker Shane Smeltz putting the visitors to the sword.

Smeltz, in his first game back from an ankle injury, scored in the 86th and 89th minute.

The All Whites striker says it's great to be back after missing five games and he paid tribute to new coach Kenny Lowe as the Glory claimed back-to-back wins.

The Heart's winless run matches the A-League record set by the now-defunct New Zealand Knights between 2005-06.

The Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory drew 1-1 in the night's other game.

The Wellington Phoenix host the Central Coast Mariners on Sunday.
