Phoenix thrash Victory by five goals

8:26 am on 19 January 2014

The Wellington Phoenix footballers have scored the A-League club's second-best result ever, by thrashing the Melbourne Victory 5-0 at home in the capital.

The win over the Victory pushes the Phoenix up to within two points of the playoff places, and came through two first-half goals to midfielder Carlos Hernandez and another from his Costa Rica team-mate Kenny Cunningham.

Jeremy Brockie finally broke his long drought with an 86th minute finish, followed by Belgian striker Stein Huysegems two minutes later.

The only blight on the result was a calf injury to Hernandez.

In other results, the Central Coast Mariners climbed above the Victory to third with a 1-0 away win over struggling Sydney FC.

The Sydney side are just above the Phoenix on goal difference, in seventh.
