Australian rally starts tonight

6:04 pm on 3 September 2009

The World Rally Championship returns to Australia for the first time in three years with competition hotting up.

With just three rounds to go Ford team driver Mikko Hirvonnen leads reigning world champion Sebastien Loeb by just three points.

The drivers will face 35 demanding special stages over the fast and open gravel roads of New South Wales before the rally ends on Sunday.

Hirvonnen was victorious the last time the event was down under in 2006 and he'll be hoping to clinch his fourth WRC win in a row come Sunday.

The action begins tonight with two short super special stages.
