Australian George O'Brien has won round three of the State New Zealand Ocean Swim series with an impressive victory in Wellington.

The 22-year-old fought off strong challenges from Tauranga swimmer Nathan Capp and 2012 London Olympian Dylan Dunlop-Barrett in the shortened race, which was cut from 3.3 kilometres to two kilometres because of strong winds and choppy conditions.

Each swimmer's leading three efforts count towards the series, with double points on offer at the final race in April.

The women's winner was Wellington's Emma Robinson, the 18-year-old racing away at the start from fellow capital swimmers Josie Kozyniak and Courtney Carson.
