Gerrans wins record third Tour title in Adelaide

The Australian cyclist Simon Gerrans has won his record third Tour Down Under title as the 2006 and 2012 champion finished out of trouble in Sunday's final stage in Adelaide.

German sprint star Andre Greipel took out the high-speed finish for his 16th Tour stage win from Australian Mark Renshaw, as all eyes were on what's being called the end of the greatest race in the Tour's 15-year history.

Gerrans went into the final stage with a one-second lead over compatriot Cadel Evans, and five seconds from Italian Diego Ulissi, but there was no way Evans or Ulissi could break away from the peloton on the flat course and survive to the finish.

Gerrans is a better sprinter than Evans or Ulissi and his Orica-GreenEDGE team were the strongest team in this year's Tour, so with no disaster befalling Gerrans, his one second lead may as well have been one hour.
