A last-gasp try by lock James Broadhurst in the fourth quarter that was converted by Hurricanes debutant Marty Banks sealed the game in front of a sold out crowd of 6,000 fans.
The Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett says he was thrilled with his team's defensive work, particularly in the first quarter which the Hurricanes lead 19-0.
He says he was impressed by Banks, who scored a stunning try and kicked three conversions.
On Friday, the Highlanders kicked off their pre-season by beating the ACT Brumbies 15-11 in Queenstown.
