The New Zealand women's hockey team have beaten host nation the USA 2-1 in the final game to win their three-nation series in San Diego.

The game came down to the final whistle when the Black Sticks were awarded a penalty corner and Capital striker Anita Punt knocked it home to secure the series win after full-time.

They led 1-0 at half-time through Canterbury's Olivia Merry from a penalty corner, but the USA pressed hard and levelled the game through a field goal 20 minutes into the second half.

It was a very intense last 10 minutes with opportunities at both ends of the field before the Black Sticks were fortunate to earn the crucial penalty corner on the final whistle for a calm and composed Punt to drag flick it home.
