The Bath coach Mike Ford has revealed league star Sam Burgess will take a pay cut when he joins the English rugby side from South Sydney at the end of the 2014 NRL campaign.

Burgess ended speculation about his future this week when he confirmed he'd return to the UK later this year and take up a career in the 15-man game and try to earn a place in England's Rugby World Cup side in 2015.

The 25-year-old will be released from the final two years of the four-year deal he agreed with the Rabbitohs in August 2012, estimated to be in the region of $700,000 a season.

He also has a string of lucrative sponsorship deals to his name after employing the services of well-credentialled commercial manager James Erskine.

Bath, who are backed by multi-millionaire businessman Bruce Craig, have splashed out more than ($1 million) to sign Burgess, but Ford says his decision to leave the NRL is down to more than just cash.

He says the Rabbitohs forward has taken a drop in pay to return to England as he wants to prove himself in the 15-man code.
