The defending champions, Bayern Munich, have dented Arsenal's Champions League hopes, with a 2-nil away win in an incident-packed last-16 first leg clash in London.

Arsenal wasted an early opportunity to go ahead when Mesut Ozil's weak penalty was easily saved by Manuel Neuer.

The home team were then reduced to 10 men when the goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, was sent off for taking out Arjen Robben after 38 minutes but David Alaba missed his penalty.

Bayern finally opened the scoring through Toni Kroos after 54 minutes and Thomas Mueller headed the second goal from a Philipp Lahm cross in the 88th minute.

In this morning's other match Diego Costa headed a late goal to give Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win at AC Milan.
