The Chiefs coach Dave Rennie has blasted his players indisipline but lauded their character after the double-defending champions opened their Super Rugby campaign with a 18-10 win over the Crusaders in Christchurch.

It took a 79th minute intercept try to kill of the Crusaders comeback, the hosts left ruing 7 missed penalty kicks as they failed to capitalise on the Chiefs repeated infringements.

Rennie happy to scrape the win but concedes the Chiefs can't continue to cede so many penalties.

The Crusaders were denied a bonus point after Aaron Cruden converted the Chiefs last-gasp try.
